What is an IP phone – how does an IP phone work?

Friday, February 1st, 2008
IP Phone An IP phone looks very much like a regular phone except that rather then having a phone connection it has an Ethernet connection. This allows this phone to be plugged directly into a switch or a router. If you have a small business and you are using a regular (analog) phone once you use this you may wonder where it has been all of your life.
A PBX system provides digital functions like call hold with music and station to station transfer to the handsets. Once the call is ready to go to the main phone lines (PSTN) the PBX converts all of these things back to analog. On the other hand an IP phone sends and receives packets or digital information. This allow you to use a hosted system for any functions you want rather then need to spend the money to have these functions housed at your end of the call. Calls can come one and off of the internet and the functions can literally be located anywhere. The is no need for an ATA in this case a VoIP call goes directly from the phone to the internet. With a good hosted PBX set up your business VoIP phone can have all the functionality as a system that costs tens of thousands of dollars with nothing more then an internet connection and an IP phone.Functions like music on hold, extension dialing, auto attendant, after hour’s settings, and so much more can be yours even if your company is only just you.An IP phone starts for as low as $70 and go up from there, but perhaps the best part of all is that you don’t need to spend more to have all the functions you want. Unlike a PBX system which seems that every function or service you want to add is going to cost you thousands of dollars with an IP hosted PBX setup most all of the features you will ever need are right there waiting for you when you are ready to use them.

What is Analog how does my phone use it?

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

Analog is the term used to describe modulated sound frequency. Before you go running in terror let me explain. Analog is the way we hear. Sound is formed by creating vibrations in the air. These vibrations are called sound waves. The speed of these waves is based on how high or low the tone is. The lower the sound the slower the wave moves. An analog telephone works much in the same way that 2 tin cans and a string does. The sound wave is captured by the 1st can and the vibration travels along the string to the 2nd can where it then creates a sound wave in the air inside of can #2 which you can then hear. An analog phone works basically this same way. The vibration is captured and the vibration is amplified and sent along the phone line. This why a new line has to be ran everytime you want another phone line because only one signal can travel on that line at a time.

I realize this is a bit over simplified but hopefully it will help you with the basic concept. If you would like to understand why digital phone is different you can go to Why Digital phone is different from analog to learn more about digital phone.

Why Digital phone is different from Analog

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

One of the most significant parts of VoIP is that it uses digital rather then analog to carry and deliver the sound you hear.  The reason digital can provide so much better quality is because of how it works. Rather then capturing and sending the sound waves digital allows the wave to be analyzed and stored as data in bits known as packets.  These packets can then be sent just like any other piece of information along a line and then reassembled and played at the other end.

We all have heard the sound quality difference between a cassette and a CD so our ears can tell us that the sound quality is better.  What you may not know is that because the signal is in bits rather then the sound wave itself traveling along the wire this can allow for more information capabilty being sent through the line.  It is also not necessary for this signal to travel as directly as possible like is the case with analog or even at the same time.  As long as all the information can be put back together at the end before being played it really doesnt matter to a digital sound how it get there.

What this means to you the VoIP user is that you have the potential in VoIP for

Better quality

Faster delivery due to digital sound being able to be compressed

Lower cost potentially because of less total bandwidth usage

More potential for other service including video to be added at a latter date

Is there an opportunity to make money in a VoIP business?

Friday, January 18th, 2008

In late 2004 Fortune Magazine estimated that by the end of 2008 there would be more then 18 million VoIP user in the US. As of August of 2007 there were already 16.5 million customers that had switched to VoIP. In 2004 the major telephone and cable companies all considered Internet based phone calling to be a trend that would remain only an interest of the geeks. Now most all of these companies either have VoIP solutions, though some of them are hard to find, and ALL of them know that they must either retool to Voip or become obsolete TMCnet

And that is just the tip of the iceberg. The hosted VoIP solution is perhaps the best solution for anyone looking to capitalize on this industry. If you could go back in time and invest in computers or internet or CD’sor cell phones any other of the many new technologies that are part of our everyday lives. Hosted Voip services gives you an opportunity to own and operate your own VoIP company and have the full functionality of a full telephone switch (which is known as a Class 5 switch) for less then a fraction of the cost of buying even a small portion of the equipment. Hosted VoIP resellers can set their own price, sell their way and be their own phone company with per customer profit margins at or even above 50% of what the customer is paying. All of that and in EVERY case you will be saving the customer money of the cost of standard phone service. Imagine if you even had only 500 customers and you made even $10 a month off of a $25 service. That’s $5000 a month. People are doing becoming VoIP resellers everyday. You can to!! Feel free to go to VoIP Business Opportunity to find out more!

What about the emergency services (E911)?

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

The emergency service (911 and E911) controversy has been greatly over exaggerated in the media;  What most people don’t know is that more then 80% of the US does not have any type of 911 service.  That’s right! In MOST places in the US you either can not dial 911 or if you can the call is just routed to the receptionist at the local sheriff’s office or some place like that..  Nearly 80% of the people in the US live in about 20% of the area geographically.  These cities may be best recognized by the fact that most of them have a local football or basketball team, and are even some times referred to as the NFL cities.  These area have E911 service in MOST of the local calling area but how does the telephone companies 911 service work?  The caller ID information passes along with the listed address information to the emergency service city and service are dispatched.  But what if you phone company listing is old?  Sadly the phone company’s directory listing often is the least updated set of information of any telecom services

Compare this system to VoIP which not only allow the customer to update their information whenever they want to as often as they need to, but also some VoIP service can have much more additional information for the emergency operator to attempt to get all the information possible. Services like emergency response buttons can be tied through VoIP provider and not only contact emergency service but even a whole list of people.  Schools are using advanced versions to proactively notify not only the police but they can also call all the numbers on file for all the parents and let them know there is an emergency at the call and any information that needs to be given to the parents about the emergency.

Once again you can see – The more we adopt VoIP the more that becomes possible.

What is VoIP?

Sunday, January 13th, 2008

Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) is very simply your voice traveling over the internet.

VOIP is not new– internet users have been talking over computer chat programs for years. What’s new is the advanced technology that allows us to use VOIP with our house phones and the standard telephone system. This is a whole new breed of telecommunications!

“VOIP gives customers a sense of WOW. WOW hasn’t been used to describe telecom since the 1950’s advent of the furry pink Princess phone. But the inherent flexibility of the Internet protocol may at last make that word appropriate.” Business Week

Why is VoIP so cheap or why does my local phone company charge me so much?

Sunday, January 6th, 2008

Have you looked at your phone bill lately?  Have you ever asked yourself “what is all this and why am I paying so much?”?  Did you know that the phone companies have over 25,000 lobbyists in Washington?  Why?  Did you know that in Japan they have a 100Mb fiber connection to their residence?  Did you know that the reason why we approved the phone company to charge us additional fees for service like voice mail is because the phone company promised Congress that if they could be allowed to charge for these services that they would have fiber optic service to all residences by the year 2005?  And NOW they are actually asking for new concessions with the promise that they will do the same exact thing that they have already charged us for and never did.  Most cities that do have fiber connections to their house paid additional for it of the city built it themselves.  It doesn’t take many scandals like Enron and others like it to make us see pretty clearly that though a lot of money is being collected there is no longer a reasonable expectation of service for the cost.  As long as we continue to pay and not look for alternatives the more they will charge us.  It is no wonder that VoIP has had such a huge impact on the phone market.  VoIP prices have dropped overall phone service cost by 30% and it is continuing to drop.  Imagine if everyone adopted VoIP service.  Did you know that IF everyone was to go to VoIP phone service that the average cost for UNLIMITED INTERNATIONAL calling would be at or below $5 a month!  THAT’S RIGHT $5 A MONTH!!!

I would be surprised if that one fact alone makes you look seriously at VoIP service.
